Adding Depth and Interest to Your Space: The Power of Texture and Pattern

If you’ve spent any time thinking about interior design, or even watched a few hours of interior design shows, you’ve probably heard the terms “texture” and “pattern”. Texture and pattern are arguably two of the most important, referenced concepts when it comes to designing your space.

But what do these terms mean? And how can you leverage the power of “texture” and “pattern” when designing your own space?

We’re covering all that and more in this article. Let’s dive in!

Defining The Terms: Texture + Pattern

When working through an interior design, activating the senses is important. You want to consider how the space looks, smells, feels to the touch, and more. Texture and pattern are critical in bringing the senses into your space, but it’s first important to understand what these terms even mean.

Let’s take a look…

  • Texture refers to the way something feels and looks. But that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to feel it to the touch. Although you might have a fuzzy pillow that adds texture to the space, you may also have an art piece with bumps and curves that adds texture to a space, too.

  • Pattern refers to creating a  visual weight + focal point in the space. For example, you might have an animal print piece of furniture or a tribal-patterned tapestry that captures your attention when you walk into a space.

Both texture and pattern are design elements that have the power to transform a space. Let’s take a look at an example of this in action…

Case Study: How Textures And Patterns Can Transform A Space

One of our recent projects, The Lochstone Project, is a perfect example of the use of texture and pattern in a space. Our client had lived in 9 different homes, and over the years developed a very collected design style.  We combined the collection of things our client already loved with new items to give the space a one-of-a-kind style and feel. We added texture through linen and cotton fabrics in combination with patterned wall art and accents that gave the space both softness to the touch combined with visual weight.  When you took these design elements, the Tutor style of the home, and our client’s eclectic pieces – we were ultimately able to create a space that was all their own.
