Serenity by the Sea: A Fort Lauderdale Waterfront Home Transformation

Nestled in a desirable gated community on the Intracoastal Waterway in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, our clients’ Ranch-style home, purchased in the 1970s, desperately needed a renovation project. The retired couple wanted a design that reflected their modern tastes while serving their lifestyle and entertaining needs for the years to come.

Upon meeting with our clients, we identified clear goals to inform our project’s scope and details. Beyond our primary goal of updating the traditional Tuscan style to a modern design, we specifically wanted to highlight the picturesque views along the back of the house, upgrade the kitchen and bathrooms, update the flooring, and improve the function of the home.

Transforming the outdated home into a cleaner and more modern sanctuary for entertaining would involve extensive renovations to the interior and exterior, including reconstruction of the front entrance, a complete renovation of the kitchen and three bathrooms, interior design, including furnishings and accessories for all rooms, and more.

Behind The Design

While our clients initially envisioned a kitchen and living room renovation, the existing layout required removing a powder room to create an open floor plan.  From there, we determined that we would need to renovate the existing hall bathroom, as it would become the main bathroom for guests. Identifying several other spaces we could renovate, we expanded the scope, budget, and timeline to a complete transformation.

The design plans centered around the heart of the home, the kitchen. Seamlessly flowing into additional living spaces, the kitchen set the tone for the rest of the home, informing countertops, cabinetry, tiling, lighting, and other design elements. Inspired by the laidback “Florida vibe,” along with the beautiful waterway views and neighboring modern homes, we began conceptualizing a design that integrated a relaxed yet modern elegance and featured a light and airy color palette.  Cabinetry combined light wood and high white gloss finishes; tile selections included white, Marine blue, beige, and gray tones, and the kitchen featured waterfall quartz countertops.

Emphasizing both function and form, we drew changes to increase livability as well, adding two pantries and islands to the kitchen, increasing space and storage in the laundry room, and extending the foyer.

Implementing Our Vision

As a long-distance project, execution, coordination, and collaboration with contractors and suppliers required careful communication and presented unique challenges. While regularly communicating with our contractors and clients virtually, we also scheduled several site visits to select design elements, check installation progress, and consult with our clients and partners in person.

During our initial site visit, we toured the home, discussed the project goals, met with two contractors and  the clients, and laid out our goals and vision for the project. Throughout the process, we visited the home to select interior details, consult with the contractors and our clients, and oversee installation and delivery. By the eighth visit, the house was complete and ready for professional photography.

Completion and Results

After two years of planning and execution, our clients moved into their completely renovated Florida home. Surpassing their expectations, see what our clients had to say about working with us.

“After a successful experience working with Bardi Designs to furnish our home in North Carolina, we hired them again to assist in designing and furnishing our home in Florida while it underwent a remodel from a more traditional to a transitional/contemporary style.  We loved the results of both projects and found the Bardi Team to be a joy to work with. The team was both professional and personable, as well as easy to communicate with throughout the project, addressed and accommodated our individual needs, and were flexible with changes and issues that arose over the lengthy remodel process.

During the design phase, they gave us options to look at and even went with us to the furniture warehouse to view and test products. They were thorough and detailed.  Each week we would have a meeting to update us on the project.  Not only did they help select furniture but also assisted in making structural design decisions throughout the interior and exterior of the house.  They also were impressive in their ability to coordinate and communicate with all the subcontractors.  We were happy with how they incorporated our lifestyle considerations into the design choices and with their patience with us during the lengthy project.  We love the overall results and find the home aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.”

Witnessing the joy of our clients following the successful completion of a project is the most rewarding aspect of the design process.

Bringing our initial design plans to life required extensive collaboration between professionals in every area, within our team and beyond, from contractors to delivery. We are incredibly grateful for our wonderful clients, partners, and internal team, who shared in the vision and successful completion of this exceptional home.
